ARTIST STATEMENT:

Can an article of clothing carry with it invisible ties and connections to the past and the people it may have come into contact with? My goal for this project is to connect with my mother and her side of the family through the act of restoring, wearing, and highlighting articles of clothing from her past.

Scratch

I've drawn up a sketch of what I'd like my "dress" book to look like. I'm sure things will change as time goes by and I start to really work on trying to sew it together but here it is.

I've also found some pictures of my mom in two of her dresses. I want to dig for more and I hope I find some. Here is the picture of the blue and purple dress:

And this is the dark brown dress:

  1. Once again this is a great idea! Please add photos of your mom in the dress in the book as well as the other photos. The photo of the dress
you took is very strong and the lighting is very soft. Keep it up!! -sky

  2. It's crazy how much you and your mother look alike.

So to be clear, you're taking the pictures on the blog and your putting them on that dress design? Are you going to stick with the canvas idea or are you going to use photo paper? I think that both would work in a different way. It just depends on how you want this dress to be portrayed. I kind of want to see some textile-like pictures with just the pattern of the dress in the picture from corner to corner, if you're going to put these on the dress.

  3. I agree, definitely stick a few photos of your mom in the book, just to make it extra personal and sentimental. Will there be any fabric on the actual dress, or will it be all paper?

  5. Your idea for your artist book is truly classic, I truly like it. You should try incorporating some shots of people wearing the dresses, possibly some of your mom wearing the dresses as well.

  6. Coolness! Those photos of your mom are great to maybe include on the dress. Don't be afraid to maybe distribute the pages of the dress more randomly (stagger them?).

  10. The images you have posted convey a "quilt" theme; something old, something new. I would use pictures of your mom to adhere the new pictures to the old. Will you be adding any narration?

  13. Your mom is so stylish! I love her dresses!! :D This project is really coming along great! I love the sketch that you did of the dress, but I was kind of hoping that it would have been in a similar style as the ones your mother is wearing in the photographs. I love that your putting the photos in the dress! Keep up the great work!

  15. The dress sketch is really nice! I think it will work out very well. I would really like to see the skirt part of the dress be made out of paper instead of fabric. I think it would add some great texture to the dress. I am really glad that you are adding in pictures of your mom in the dresses. This really looks like it is becoming a great experience for you.
