ARTIST STATEMENT:

Can an article of clothing carry with it invisible ties and connections to the past and the people it may have come into contact with? My goal for this project is to connect with my mother and her side of the family through the act of restoring, wearing, and highlighting articles of clothing from her past.

Possibilities

I still have to look for the fabric that I'll be using to sew the base of the dress. I'm not sure if I should go with a solid black, white, beige, or grey... or if I should go for a patterned fabric. I don't want it to be too busy because I want most of the focus to be on the bottom half where the pages are going to be. I have a sketch below of what I'm seeing everything will look like in the end.

Pages will be printed out to full page on 8 1/2 x 11 paper. I will be using a mixture of paper from glossy to standard printing paper.

I also had a question... would it be cheating if I found a ready made dress to sew everything on in case my attempts at making one from scratch doesn't pan out?

  1. Having your artist statement on the tag is a really neat idea. I would suggest putting your pictures against the colors you are thinking about and seeing which color fabric works best with the pictures. Which one makes them pop. Also, I don't think it will be cheating if you found an already made dress.

  2. I agree and I think using an already made dress would be fine.

  3. no you wouldnt be cheating.
also, why are you mixing different paper textures? i dont think you necessarily need to, but if there is a specific purpose then go for it

  4. Using an already made dress would be just fine in my opinion. Remember, this is digital photography, so what is important is photography and the digital aspect of it. I like your overall ideas, especially incorporating your artist statement into the tags of the dress.

  5. I don't think it would be cheating... As long as YOUR pictures are on the dress. I wouldn't mind seeing you use white fabric. It would kind of resemble white walls in a sense. I'm excited to see the final project!

  6. I agree with everything Sarah said. I'd definitely go with a solid color fabric but choose a color which makes the images pop and compliments them. Your pictures are vivid with color so I'd keep that going.

  7. If you are making the dress, go with a solid fabric. A print might detract but you might find something that really compliments.
There is no way buying a dress and modifying it is cheating.
However, if you have sewing questions feel free to email me. I'd be glad to help.
I am so inspired by this work. Keep on going!

  8. i think it would be fine to use an already made dress, as i am using an already made coffee table. are your images going to be printed on regular paper. have you considered using canvas or something that would hold up better.

  9. I don't think it would be cheating at all if you used an already made dress! I really like how you're putting the statement on the tag!! I'm not sure how I feel about the color of the dress... I like the idea of using a similar pattern like the ones in the photos, or maybe just white... I think it will come to you when you start putting everything together! I can't wait to see it when its done! Keep up the great work! :D

  11. I think you should go for a patterned fabric, maybe something

And if you're dress isn't everything you're expecting, use something that works!

  12. No, I don't think it would be cheating. I do like the idea though of having a beige color for the dress so the photos are not overwhelmed by the dress itself. I love the idea of having the artist statement on the tag, that's awsome! Looking good!

  13. Juleah--

You are so on the right track.

Try to make your dress and be OK with the "imperfections"--not cheating, but won't be as cool.
just find a good material to print on. So what if it aint paper. canvas? we got it. I will order it for you if you need more just give me some lead time.

    So excited!

  14. I definitely don't like the idea of a patterned fabric with your images. Less is more. I think I get this idea...you are putting paper images on a dress. Canvas is a fabric and I like the texture as well. It would be a much more suitable medium than paper, and would last longer.

Have you gone to the thrift shops for a dress that you can modify?
