ARTIST STATEMENT:

Can an article of clothing carry with it invisible ties and connections to the past and the people it may have come into contact with? My goal for this project is to connect with my mother and her side of the family through the act of restoring, wearing, and highlighting articles of clothing from her past.

  1. I see you are starting to stitch together the dress. Is everything coming along like you planned? Are you going to keep the idea of stitching the pictures to the dress? Iron-ons? Canvas? I think this is going to turn out beautiful.

  2. Well your pictures are turning out really nice so far. Are you planning on restoring all of the dresses or only this one? I really liked the idea of actually printing the pictures out on fabric and making them into a wearable dress like someone in the class mentioned, think you should keep that in mind ;). Can't wait to see more!

  3. awesome. i at first was confused by the blurry first shot but am liking it now. if it was all neat and clean i fear the restoration process would remind me of a sewing manual.
i LOVE the colors of the dress you chose. is your mom going to be in any shots? background, blurry?

  8. This is a great project which can end up as a completeley amazing book. This is a very intimate coming of age(or terms) story that can be very thought provoking.

  9. I love the idea of sewing something vintage. It's like using your grandma's embroidered hankies for doll clothes. The fabrics remind me of batiks for their rich color and designs.

  10. I agree with all of the above--this is a lovely idea and I am sure of the quality of the final product, though I know you have to do some tests and make some decisions, but we will get there.

The ones with your hands are the strongest to me because it is more obvious what is happening.
I like the idea of your mom being visible in some, even if blurry. (She is still with us--I hope that isn't insensitive?)

I am thrilled about this project-- you have a very thoughtful mind.

  13. Thank you all for the positive comments and suggestions. I've been thinking about doing a mix of fabric and paper. I have an idea of using fabric as a base and then sewing the pages on like a ruffled skirt. I'm working on some sketches and I'll probably post that soon. :)
